So for the first post after the introduction, let’s have first impressions. It’s a new season after all.
These first impressions will be short. Too many shows to cover. Too little time and motivation.
Dandy is an alien hunter. Dandy visits a breastaurant, then ends up in a planet with giant aliens. Sakuga overload. Dandy dies. Anime is saved.
This was bit of a letdown. I was impressed by the sakuga and the soundtrack, but not very much by everything else. We all had had high expectations for this is because of the staff. That’s why I felt a bit disappointed.
I didn’t enjoy the first half very much. Sure, it was well directed, but I didn’t find it funny. The comedic timing was good. It’s just that the jokes themselves weren’t funny at all, especially the ones involving the narrator. The second half was a lot better and was closer to my expectations.
Despite the first episode being a letdown, I still have faith that this series will eventually live up to my expectations.
We get a glimpse of the nopan participants in the nationals.
The premiere wasn’t very entertaining because it was just used to show us a glimpse of the schools participating. No epic mahjong. No dorama mahjong backstories. But it’s Saki, and
every girl is nopan in Saki. I like Saki as long as the pace isn’t very slow. I think the series loses it’s silly and epic feel when it’s too slow, which is a big reason why I enjoy it.
I hope Achiga will still have a fair amount of time on the spotlight because I find Achiga’s girls to be better than Kiyosumi’s as characters. My enjoyment will slightly depend on that. Just slightly, because in the end, it’s the mahjong battles that will matter the most.
Super Sonico The Animation
A popular mascot that’s inspired doujinshis, and has a huge
plot 1/2 scale pvc figure gets an anime.
Well, I didn’t like it for the most part, but this surprisingly had effort put in making it. It had a ~fuwafuwa~ atmosphere that it was trying to go for, even if it ended up making everything feel stupid. It also tried to characterize Sonico. The resulting character didn’t make any sense, but they had to make her a smart hardworking oversleeping successful multiple-part-timer guitarist airhead, otherwise she wouldn’t be this impossibly charming and sexy girl to those who’ll find her character to make sense. There must have been some way to make her character work, but they at least tried, unlike lots of other shows like this.
It was consistent in what it’s trying to do and what kind of a show it really is. It didn’t feel offensive because it was very open about what it is. Most shows like this are lazily done, so I really appreciate the effort put in this even if I still didn’t like it. Most of the things I didn’t like — the characters, the excessive stupidity, and how it’s basically just about stalking an (incoherently characterized) idol — were all just a result of what kind of a show this had to be to achieve its goals. Maybe they still could’ve done it better without changing what it is, but hey, we don’t often get to see shows like this made with effort. And I think that’s something noteworthy. Optimism is good as long you don’t delude yourself.
I appreciate the effort, but there’s still little chance that I’ll continue watching this.
Silver Spoon 2nd Season
The cow otakus are back and they have very big bras for their cows.
We all know that Silver Spoon (Gin no Saji) was very good, so it’s just a matter of maintaining the quality throughout its second cour. And for the first episode of its second cour, it mostly stays the same. I think the comedy is a little funnier now. The romance is also slightly more prominent now, even if it’s still mostly in the background.
Also, the ED was goood. That’s all.
